A List Of Ten "Thank" Songs, And Not One Turkey Among Them Essay
Because there are so few songs to honor the holiday, listeners must every year hear numerous playings of the same couple of tunes. On Thanksgiving Day you will inevitably hear “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie, as well as “Cold Turkey” by John Lennon.
The former is an epic that has little to do with Thanksgiving, other than its story takes place on that day. As for the latter, the former member of The Beatles is referring to a situation completely separate from the bird that serves as the feast in late November.
Radio stations, instead of relying on just that pair of hits, should dig a little deeper into their archives on that occasion. They could easily use the opportunity to play songs that feature the first syllable of Thanksgiving in their titles, such as the ten below.
1. Thank You For Being a Friend by Andrew Gold
After scoring a Top Ten hit with “Lonely Boy” Andrew struck gold once again with this song that became the theme for the sitcom The Golden Girls.
2. Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself by Sly and the Family Stone
The Sixties soul-rock ensemble, which served as one of the highlights at Woodstock, received their best chart position with this grateful hit.
3. Thank You Very Much by the Kaiser Chiefs
It took several years for the British alt rockers to follow up their debut Employment, but tracks like this one made it well worth the wait.
4. Thank God and Greyhound by Roy Clark
After spending the decade of the Sixties primarily on the country charts, the future Hee Haw co-host crossed over to pop with hits like this one and “Yesterday When I Was Young.”
5. I Thank You by ZZ Top
Texas’s most famous trio included this song on Deguello, the same album that featured “Cheap Sunglasses” and “I’m Bad I’m Nationwide.”
6. Thank God I’m a Country Boy by John Denver
Fiddling and farming are the two favorite activities in this enduring hit by the artist who named himself after the city near the Rocky Mountains.
7. Thank God For Girls by Weezer
The musical ode to females was the first single from the power pop quarter’s White album.
8. Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande
Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez, Pete Davidson and Mac Miller are all exes mentioned in this breakup song, which served as the title track of a hugely successful album.
9. Thank You by Led Zeppelin
Snuggled in between “Whole Lotta Love”, “Heartbreaker” and “The Lemon Song”, this track can be found on Led Zeppelin II.
10. Thanks But No Thanks, Thanks To You by Marty Robbins
There would be no better way to celebrate the occasion than with a country classic that gives thanks three times in its title.
