Pixar became a movie making giant when it released it’s first movie with Disney called Toy Story in 1995. Since then Pixar created movies about Cars, Monsters, Bugs, Super Heroes, Robots, Fish, and Feelings.

With the release of every Pixar movie, they also released a short movie that was seen before that may or may no have anything to do with the movie. The shorts are great, and if you can’t choose which one, the birds on the telephone wire are hilarious.

Pixar was originally launched in 1979 as part of Lucasfilm. George Lucas, of Star Wars fame, sold it to Steve Jobs, of Apple Computer fame, in 1986 for $5 million. In 2006, Disney acquired Pixar for $7.4 billion making Steve Jobs the largest Disney stockholder.

When watching any new Pixar movie, my daughter and I are always wondering what role John Ratzenberger will play, as he has been in every Pixar movie to date. Our latest thing to look for in a Pixar movie is “A113”, which refers to a classroom at CalArts that was utilized by John Lasseter and Brad Bird. Other common items to look for are a Luxo Ball and a Pizza Planet truck.

Watching the first Pixar movie was a lot like watching the first Star Wars movie. It was nothing like animation, however, it was an animated movie. It didn’t hurt that the movie also featured Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as the major characters Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

In Toy Story 2, released in 1999, Woody finds out that he is a part of a valuable collection with Jesse, Woody’s horse, and the evil miner. The gang come to rescue Woody before he is shipped to Japan.

In Toy Story 3, released in 2010, the gang find themselves given away as Andy goes to college. However, the day care kids aren’t as gentle with the toys as Andy once was. The top toy makes sure all the new toys end up in the toddler room. Woody finds out about this and makes sure all the toys end up at a nice home.

Another blockbuster about a family of super heroes was the Incredibles starring Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, and Samuel L. Jackson. You have to love the family working as a team to save the world from the evil genious plot that goes wrong.

By 2006, Pixar was on a roll releasing its fourth major blockbuster in six years and did the stars come out for this one including Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, George Carlin, Cheech Marin, Richard Petty, and Michael Keaton. Cars is about a race car, Lightning McQueen, who learns that going fast isn’t what life’s all about when he ends up in the town of Radiator Springs.

Cars 2, released in 2011, was more about Mater than in was Lighting McQueen. All the original characters are back as the crew goes to Tokyo and London as Mater becomes a secret agent. The movie roughly resembles a James Bond 007 movie as the secret agents work to find a bomb.

Finding Nemo is another family favorite as it was about a dad looking for his son and starred Ellen DeGeneres as Dory. One of my favorite scenes is with the turtles.

Inside Out is about five feelings, Happy, Sad, Envy, Fear, and Anger, that live inside you. Working together keeps a person sane, but when two are removed from the equation, the whole world is turned Inside Out.

The fourth movie in the Pixar collection was a monster hit (pun intended). John Goodman and Billy Crystal play the two major characters in the movie Sulley and Mike Wazowski. The monsters go into the human world to collect energy which they get by making kids scream. One of my family’s favorite movies.

In Monster’s University, we find out how the Mike and Sulley relationship was formed as they both attend college and Monster’s University and must ban together to win Greek contest.

Brave is Pixar’s 13th full length movie. The setting is 10th century Scotland where the main character Merida must undo a spell cast on her mother. This is a great movie about growing up and beginning to understand how one person is attached and effects the whole group.

Up starring Ed Asner and Christopher Plummer was an ok Pixar movie. I must be getting used to the production style as I’m looking for more character depth and innovation and the talking dogs just weren’t it.

I must admit that I was disappointed with Wall-e, which included actress Sigourney Weaver. I liked the premise, it just didn’t seem to flow very well and the scenes seemed to be chopped together.

The relationship between Wall-e and Eva is a classic love story, however, the premise where Earth is laden with trash and a spaceship has been flying around for centuries finally returns back with a bunch of fat earth people.

A rat cooking in a restaurant would be cause for alarm except when its a Pixar movie. With actors Peter O’Toole, Brad Garrett, Brian Dennehy, and Will Arnett this was a great movie about life and trust.

I love the friendship between the rat and the chef as we learn that the simple things in life may be better than all the fancy coverings.

A Bugs Life was the second full feature release of Pixar and it continued what Toy Story had started as a fun kids movie. A Bugs Life was extremely entertaining, but it wasn’t as successful as its older brother.

After the movie the credits are sometimes as entertaining as the movie. For example, at the end of Cars, John Ratzenberger does a great spoof on some of his other Pixar characters, except they are in cars. It’s a must see.

In every Pixar movie the code A113 is incorporated into a scene. Here’s the list as we have seen it:

• Brave – Above the door of the witch’s cottage is ACXIII. CXIII is the Roman Numerals for 113.
• Cars 2 – A113 is the number on Siddeley’s tail, Mater’s license plate, and part of the image number on the spy photo of Miles Axelrod’s engine.
• Up – A113 is the number of the court room.
• Wall-e – In Wall-e A113 was the directive not to return to earth
• Ratatouille – Git, the lab rat, has tag A113 on his left ear.
• Cars – The number of the freight train that almost crashes into Lightning McQueen while he is chasing Mack and it is Mater’s license plate.
• The Incredibles – Mirage mentions Room number A113 in Syndrome’s lair. A more obscure version is the prison level A1 where Mr. Incredible in Cell #13: A1 & 13.
• Finding Nemo – Model code on camera used by scuba diver
• Monsters Inc – When Sulley sees Smitty and Needleman loading the trash compactor, A113 is seen on the sign in the background.
• Toy Story 2 – Airport announcement for “LassetAir Flight A113”
• A Bugs Life – Code a cereal box
• Toy Story Series – License Plate of Andy’s mom’s van.

I just finished Walter Isaacson’s biography on Steve Jobs and didn’t realize how much impact Jobs had on Pixar. From purchasing the company from George Lucas for $5 million to selling it to Disney and becoming Disney’s biggest shareholder, Steve brought his view of crossing art and technology to create a great company that creates movies that my family and I love to watch.

John Ratzenberger known for his portrayal of the postman Cliff Claven on the sitcom Cheers, has a role in every Pixar movie to date. Sometimes his voice is easily recognized and other times it isn’t. In the credits following the original Cars movies, they even make fun of the same voice in multiple movies.
