Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Review
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is the Netflix four-part event that Gilmore Girls fans have been waiting close to a decade to see. After those final moments back in 2007, everyone was wondering what would happen to Rory next, if Lorelai and Luke would tie the knot, if Rory would ever find her true love, and, most importantly, if in fact the story was finished forever. Well, now, fans worldwide can return to Stars Hollow one last time. But, is it worth the trip? Should one hold the memories of the original show tightly and not bother with the revival? The answer is no. It’s totally worth it.
The revival is comprised of 4 movies, each set in a different season over a year’s time. The show starts with Winter, with Rory returning home for a day to visit her mom. The story starts immediately and moves along at a fast pace just like the beloved original did. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel hadn’t lost a step, even after being away for so long. They still had their charm, their wit, and their infamous pop-culture references. It was a huge rush of nostalgia that made us all believe, if for a second, that we were walking along the streets of Stars Hollow with them.
The show continued on through Spring, then Summer, and finally Fall. We saw most everyone from the original show return, some with large roles and some with mere cameos. I admit that some appearances felt either unnecessary or rushed, and some could have been done better. But, with the time constraint, I can understand why some were written the way they were.
In conclusion, I have nothing but praise for the revival. Actually, I do have one complaint. It was over too soon! But hey, we can still binge the other 7 seasons right? It’s been a fantastic 8 seasons and, if we never see the girls again, at least we have some idea of where they’re going next in life. I rate the revival show 3.5 out of 4.
