Star Wars The Last Jedi - 4 Plot Lines to Watch Essay

What to Watch for in The Last Jedi

I’ve been a fan of the Star Wars series since the age of 10. Over the years, the plot lines within the movie series has been spectacular and always leave you wanting more. Here are the four plot lines I will be watching for in The Last Jedi when it is released in December 2017.

  1. Who are Rey’s Parents?
  2. Who is Supreme Chancellor Snoke?
  3. Why is the movie title red?
  4. Who is the Last Jedi?

Let’s explore each of these in detail.

Plot Line #1 – Who Are Rey’s Parents

There is no reason to believe that Rey is not a Skywalker. In fact, Anakin and Luke were both identified as Jedi candidates well past the age in which training should have begun, so this is consistent with Rey as well. The only question in my mind is she Luke’s or Leia’s daughter?

In the scene where Kylo Ren is interrogating Rey, he mentions an island with a lot of water. This indicates that Rey has seen or comes from such a place. When they finally find Luke, he is on an island with a lot of water. As Rey is handing the lightsaber to Luke, this feels like a Father and Daughter moment. Finally, Anakin’s / Luke’s lightsaber calls to her in The Force Awakens is another indication thay Rey is Luke’s daughter. Finally, we need to go back to Empire Strikes Back, where Yoda tells Obiwan Kenobe that there is another. We originally thought, this statement meant Leia, but since Leia never took up the force, could the statement mean Rey? And if Rey is Luke’s daughter, this will beg a different question, who is Rey’s mother? Maz Kanata ends up with the lightsaber that Rey eventually gives to Luke. Did Maz get it from Luke directly? Probably through a third party, and I suspect Maz knows who Rey’s mother and father are.

Let’s explore Rey being Leia’s daughter for a moment. When Rey and Leia embrace after Han’s death it is almost like Mother and Daughter. Maybe Ben Solo’s twin? This would be an interesting parallel to the original Skywalker twins.

Answer: We heard Kylo tell Rey that her parents were a couple of scavengers. Can we really believe him?

Is this the secret to Rey’s Lineage? Pay Attention around the 7:45 mark.

Plot Line #2 – Who is Supreme Chancellor Snoke?

Yoda tells us there can be only 2 Sith Lords at a time, no more, no less. The Sith lords revealed in The Force Awakens are Supreme Chancellor Snoke and Kylo Ren (Ben Solo). But who could Supreme Chancellor Snoke be? Again, we look at past movies and the most powerful Sith Lords were those that were part of the Senate, Chancellor Palpatine, or previous Jedi, such as Anakin Skywalker and Count Dooku. Anakin became Darth Vader and Dooku became Darth Tyranus.

The history leads us down the path of a previous Jedi, however, we saw most if not all the Jedi killed in Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith. Besides Obi-wan and Yoda, there is one we never did see die, just fall out of a window, Mace Windu. Could Mace Windu be Supreme Chancellor Snoke almost 40 years later? Would Mace Windu want revenge on the Skywalker family years later?

In fact, even though we think we saw this person die, he may have just fallen. Chancellor Palpatine at the end of Return of the Jedi, is thrown into what looks like an energy core. what if he survived and has drawn Ben Solo to the dark side similar to the way he did Anakin Skywalker?

Answer: Snoke died at the hands of Kylo, so we probably will not know the answer to this question.

Plot Line #3 – Why is the Movie Title Red

We have seen the movie title red in two previous Star Wars movies: Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith. All other movies have the nice yellow-gold lettering. Looking for commonalities between Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith, we find two major themes.

The first theme is there is a death in the Skywalker family. In Revenge of the Sith, Padme dies while giving birth to Luke and Leia. In Return of the Jedi, Anakin Skywalker separates himself from Darth Vader and dies. With the death of Carrie Fisher in 2016, we certainly will see Leia die. However, could the title indicate that we will also see Luke die?

The second theme is that there is a major shift in the Sith lords. Remembering there are always two, no more, no less. In Return of the Jedi, Emperor Palpatine is thrown into the ship’s reactor and Darth Vader no longer exists when Anakin dies. In Revenge of the Sith, we see the rise of Darth Vader as a powerful Sith lord.

Will we see a shift in the Sith lords in this movie? Of course. I believe we will see the death of Supreme Chancellor Stoke possibly in a final battle with Luke.

Answer to Theme 1: Luke dies, we think of exhaustion

Answer to Theme 2: Snoke is killed by Kylo

Plot Line #4 – Who is the Last Jedi?

As the title indicates, the movie is about the Last Jedi. One thing to remember is the word Jedi is both singular and plural, think about where this word is used for example, the Jedi Council, or a Jedi can feel force flowing through them.

The looming question: is the Last Jedi one person or a group of people? If it’s one person, then we must anticipate it being Rey and that Luke will die either from natural causes or in an epic lightsaber battle. If it’s a group of people, then there needs to be a leader and it appears Luke may be the one to start up the Jedi Council once again.

Given that heroes typically die during the Star Wars series, Obi-wan, Yoda, Mace Windu, the cast of Rogue One, and most recently Han Solo. It appears we are in for another death of a beloved character in the Last Jedi.

Answer: This was actually revealed in the intro to The Force Awakens.
